How to Dress for Fall Photoshoot Sessions
The fresh smell of rain, the crisp crunch of leaves under your feet, the sight of orange and red trees...what's not to love about fall? At this time of year it's not uncommon to see families enjoying their time outside while the sun's still shining and before all of the rain comes falling down. You may be wondering yourself what to wear while outside, especially if you and your family have booked a fall photoshoot session with me.
There are plenty of ways to dress up nicely for these photoshoot sessions no matter what time of year. In this case, take a look at my tips on how to dress for fall photoshoots and see what you can do for yours.
Complimentary colour ideas
Usually the backgrounds in Port Coquitlam and nearby locations are so autumnal, it's not worth wearing something that competes with the background. Complimentary clothing and colours ideas include denim, creams, mustard yellows, dark greens, greys, and plum purples. If you want to include more autumnal colours to wear, pairing them with lighter neutrals, denim, and even chunky knitted clothes can always make for a very flattering appearance on camera.
Matching exactly won't exactly work out
Matching clothing to be exactly the same is not only difficult to pull off, it's also very weird to see on camera. Though there are some matching accessories that can make for a quirky and fun picture, entire outfits are less than fun to really even consider. Think of it this way: would you like to stand out with very subtle differences and look amazing as a result, or would you rather blend in with someone or something else so that no one can make a distinction between one person and the other?
Think in terms of coordination, rather than trying to match exactly. Look at the different shades of each clothing item you want to wear and then try to coordinate your outfit from one piece of clothing to the next.
Let the background speak for itself
Like I said, the backgrounds of autumn in Port Coquitlam can be so gorgeous, it's not even worth competing against. So...don't wear things that will either blend in with the settings or clash. Bold lettering and logos can distract the eye from the picture and make you look at the brand rather than what matters most: the people, a.k.a. the subject(s).
Weather doesn't matter
Rain or shine, fall looks amazing—and so can you! If the weather looks like rain we can plan to bring clear umbrellas and you can wear your raincoat and boots. Why clear umbrellas? Because then the rainwear won't distract the eye away from you, the subject of the photo. Black, solid umbrellas on the other hand can make your face appear too dark on camera, meaning you won't look your best.
Whatever weather you prepare for, you should keep coordination in mind as well. For example, if the forecast calls for rain, everyone should wear boots and coats.
Wear what makes you happiest!
Honestly this is the most valuable tip I can offer to clients who are stumped on what to wear. Though a professional photoshoot is what you're paying for, that doesn't mean you have to settle on clothing that makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable. You can still dress formally and still feel good while looking good. We want that feeling to be what comes across on camera for sure.
