Why Summer is the Perfect Time for Maternity Photos

June 19, 20254 min read

Pregnancy is a beautiful, life-changing journey—and what better time to capture it than during the warm, golden days of summer?

Whether you're soaking up the sun before baby arrives or simply want to freeze this season of life in a stunning way, summer offers the ideal backdrop for maternity photos that feel magical, natural, and true to you. Here's why this season shines brightest for bump portraits—and why now is the perfect time to schedule your session.

Golden Light and That Summer Glow

There’s something special about the hour before sunset. In summer, the evening light stretches long and soft, wrapping everything in a dreamy glow—perfect for highlighting your beautiful bump.

Summer sun also does wonders for your skin. With a touch of natural color and the glow that comes with pregnancy, you’ll look luminous without trying.

Quick Tip: Late afternoon or early evening sessions give us that warm light photographers love.

Endless Outdoor Locations

Summer gives us all the variety. Beaches, gardens, fields, forest trails, or even your backyard—they’re all options when the skies are clear and the weather is warm.

You don’t have to worry about sudden rain showers or chilly winds. You can walk barefoot through the grass, sit in the shade of a tree, or dip your toes in the water—all while feeling relaxed and comfortable.

This season makes it easy to keep your session natural and full of real, joyful moments.

Easy, Beautiful Wardrobe Choices

Say goodbye to layers and heavy fabrics. In summer, you can wear light, flowing dresses that move with the breeze or a fitted gown that hugs your shape just right.

Soft cotton, lace, and chiffon look great on camera. Whether you prefer simple styles or bold prints, there are so many ways to dress in a way that feels like you.

And yes—going barefoot? Always a win.

Nature at Its Peak

From wildflowers to fields of green, everything outdoors feels full of life right now.

Each type of location tells its own story. A lavender patch can feel calm and romantic. A sunflower field brings energy and color. A wooded trail at sunset feels cozy and quiet.

We’ll pick a place that matches your style, and let nature do the rest.

Good Timing for Many Moms-to-Be

If you're due in the fall or winter, summer is just right for your session. Around 28 to 34 weeks, your belly is beautifully rounded, and you still have the energy to enjoy the shoot.

Waiting too long can feel uncomfortable. Hot weather is easier to manage when we plan your shoot for a cooler time of day, and this timing gives you a calm window before the busyness of preparing for baby really begins.

A Chance to Include the Whole Family

Want to include your partner or older kids? Summer makes it easy.

No coats to layer, no rushing through a chilly shoot. Kids can explore, play, and cuddle up for sweet moments. Partners can walk beside you, share a quiet smile, or wrap you in a hug as the sun sets.

These aren’t stiff poses. They’re everyday moments that show how much love is already wrapped around your growing baby.

A Moment to Pause

Even though summer can be full of plans and prep, it also invites us to slow down a little. The longer days, the quiet evenings—they remind us to take a breath.

That’s what a maternity session is all about. Slowing down, being present, and honoring what’s happening right now. You’re doing something incredible. This session is a way to step into that and feel proud of all you’re carrying—literally and emotionally.

It’s also a great excuse to feel pampered and beautiful. Because you deserve that.

Common Questions About Summer Maternity Sessions

When should I book?

The sweet spot is between 28–34 weeks. For summer, that usually means scheduling your session in June, July, or early August.

What if it’s really hot?

We avoid the middle of the day. Early mornings and evenings are best. We can take breaks, stay in the shade, and go at your pace.

Can I bring more than one outfit?

Yes! Many clients bring two or three looks—a flowing dress, a fitted style, and something personal or casual. I’m happy to help you pick pieces that photograph well.

What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?

Most people feel that way at first. But you’ll quickly see—my sessions are relaxed and natural. I guide gently, offer encouragement, and help you settle in so you feel confident and at ease.

Let's Capture the Season and This Chapter.

Maternity photography isn’t just about images. It’s about holding onto this moment. You’ll never carry this baby in quite the same way again, and that makes this time worth remembering.

Summer gives us long days, golden light, and beautiful places to help tell your story..
