Creative Photoshoot Ideas to Announce a Pregnancy

Sometimes May is truly the month of moms—in this case, I'm referring to brand new ones! Finding out you're pregnant is a truly amazing discovery for everyone involved, most especially for you, the mom.

If you simply can't wait to announce your new life-changing milestone, one way of letting your friends and family know is with a photoshoot. You may be wondering how best to go about this idea, which is where I can help! Here are some creative ideas for announcing a pregnancy in the form of a photoshoot.

1. Using Urban Art as the Scenery

Bear in mind that not all urban artwork is graffiti, and not all graffiti is urban artwork. We have a huge and ever-growing community of artists living in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and some of their works can be seen around the cities.

If you like, you could always bring chalk and a chalkboard along to write some details. Or, if appropriate, you could write on the wall and then wipe it off.

2. Let Nature Speak Up

Nature is a mother too. What better way to tell everyone you care about that you're pregnant than to let mother nature speak with you?

Other than allowing the natural light of the world to give you that motherly glow, consider giving your feet a much-needed dip in water at a dock. Choose a place at the beach where the wind can play with your maternity outfit. Or simply allow the trees, flora, and fauna to accentuate your own natural beauty?

3. Use Childlike Props

Sometimes the best way to tell others about your pregnancy is to embrace the childlike nature you and your love had as children and make the most out of the fact you'll be able to use these toys and items again. A few ideas:

Use the toys you grew up with as children, if possible. Some parents want their babies to enjoy the same kinds of toys they grew up with and remember fondly.
What are some of the children's books you grew up reading? Maybe there's a way to incorporate that into your pregnancy announcement?
Classic children's toys can make for fun props too. Some examples: toy blocks with letters from the alphabet, stuffed animals, and other small toys such as key rings.

There are a ton more prop ideas you can consider either for your pregnancy announcement or even a gender reveal (more on that below). Consider adding one of these ideas to your session:

  • Baby booties

  • Balloons with letters

  • A mini chalkboard

  • Letterboard signs

  • A clothesline with the clothes you'd like to dress your new baby in

  • Blankets

Talk to me about other prop ideas if you have them! I'd love to hear your thoughts.

3. Gender Reveals

Maybe you and your love are so excited to name your new little one that you already know what their gender is. Having a photographer present at your gender reveal can be a fun thing to do for a lot of reasons:

  • Opportunities for colours. You can either think outside of the usual pink and blue or embrace those two colours in your wardrobe, for example. Maybe you've picked out their bedroom colours and want to celebrate that kind of achievement?

  • Water guns using the typical colours of blue and pink can be a fun and lighthearted way to reveal the gender.

  • Cakes are a very popular means of revealing your baby's gender. Consider making this tasty treat ahead of time for your photoshoot and have the icing say "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!" or "And then there were three!" to name a few examples.

  • Confetti can be a fun way to represent the gender your child will be. Be sure to use this idea indoors for an easier cleanup! (Outside, while doable, can be super tricky depending on where you scatter it.)

  • Get the siblings involved. If the baby is going to be a brand new brother or sister, get their older or younger siblings involved with the photos.

Again, if you have any other ideas for this kind of a photo session, feel free to leave a comment at the end of the post or let me know when you book.
