Why Cherry Blossom Sessions Are So Special

April 09, 20266 min read

There is something about cherry blossoms that stops you in your tracks.

Maybe it is the way the branches seem to glow — soft pink against a spring sky. Maybe it is how the petals drift down like confetti, as if the trees are celebrating something only they understand. Maybe it is the way the world suddenly feels lighter after months of gray.

Whatever it is, cherry blossom season in Port Coquitlam and the Tri-Cities is one of those rare, fleeting gifts. It arrives quietly, transforms everything it touches, and then — just like that — it is gone.

And that is exactly what makes cherry blossom photo sessions so incredibly special.

The Magic of Blossoms: Why They Create Stunning Portraits

Cherry blossoms are not just beautiful. They are a feeling.

They bring a softness that is hard to replicate any other time of year. The light filters differently through those delicate petals. The colors — blush, cream, soft white, dusty pink — create a natural palette that flatters everyone. Skin looks warm. Eyes look bright. Everything feels gentle and romantic without trying.

As a photographer, I live for this kind of light. It does so much of the work. The blossoms add depth and texture to every frame without overpowering the people in it. They become part of the story — not the whole story.

And there is an emotional layer too. Cherry blossoms represent renewal, new beginnings, and the beauty of impermanence. When you stand beneath those branches with the people you love, something shifts. You breathe a little deeper. You hold a little tighter. You are present in a way that everyday life does not always allow.

That is what I want to capture. That feeling.

When Do Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Port Coquitlam?

Timing is everything with cherry blossoms — and that is not an exaggeration.

In Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, and across the Tri-Cities, cherry blossom season typically runs from late March through mid-April, depending on the weather. Some years we get an early burst in the last week of March. Other years, the peak does not hit until the second week of April. Warmer springs push things earlier. A cold snap can delay everything.

The bloom window itself is short — usually just one to two weeks of peak blossoms before the petals begin to fall.

That is why I keep a close eye on the trees every spring and communicate with my clients as soon as the blooms begin to open. When the blossoms are ready, we move. Flexibility is key during this season, because waiting even a few days can mean the difference between full, lush canopies and bare branches.

If cherry blossom portraits are on your wish list, the best thing you can do is reach out early — even before the trees bloom — so we can plan your session and be ready to go when the moment arrives.

Who Are Cherry Blossom Sessions Perfect For?

This is one of my favourite things about blossom season — it suits so many different stages of life.

Families. There is something about children playing under a canopy of pink that makes my heart expand. The blossoms add magic without needing anything else. Kids can run, explore, and just be themselves while the trees do the rest.

Couples. Whether you are newly engaged, celebrating an anniversary, or simply want to document this chapter together, cherry blossoms create one of the most romantic backdrops nature offers. Soft, intimate, and effortlessly beautiful.

Expecting parents. Maternity sessions under the blossoms carry a quiet poetry — new life surrounded by new blooms. The symbolism practically writes itself.

Graduates. For Port Coquitlam grads looking for something beyond the standard cap-and-gown portrait, a cherry blossom session is fresh, modern, and unforgettable. It celebrates the milestone in a way that feels personal.

Personal branding. Entrepreneurs and professionals who want headshots or branding images with a natural, approachable feel — blossom sessions deliver warmth and authenticity that a studio wall simply cannot.

No matter your stage of life, cherry blossoms have a way of making the session feel meaningful.

What to Wear for Your Cherry Blossom Photo Session

One of the most common questions I get this time of year is about clothing — and my advice is always to keep it simple.

The blossoms already bring so much color and texture. You do not need to compete with them. Instead, let them complement you.

Colours that work beautifully: Cream, white, soft blue, sage green, blush, dusty rose, light gray, muted florals. Earth tones and neutrals are always a safe choice.

What to avoid: Bright neon, bold patterns, or heavily branded clothing. These tend to pull attention away from faces and the natural beauty around you.

Textures and layers: Flowy dresses, linen, light knits, and soft fabrics photograph beautifully in spring light. Layers also help with the unpredictable BC spring weather — mornings can be cool, even when the afternoon warms up.

Shoes: Comfortable ones. Many of the best blossom spots involve grass, paths, or slightly uneven ground. You want to move freely and feel relaxed.

And above all — wear something that feels like you. Authenticity always photographs better than perfection.

The Best Time of Day for Cherry Blossom Portraits

Light matters. It always does — but especially during blossom season.

The golden hour — that last hour or so before sunset — is stunning under the blossoms. The warm light mingles with the pink petals, and everything takes on a soft, dreamlike quality.

Morning sessions can also be beautiful, especially on overcast days when the light is even and gentle. Overcast skies are actually a photographer's friend during blossom season. They soften everything and eliminate harsh shadows, letting the blossoms and the people glow equally.

Midday sun is the one time I try to avoid. Direct overhead light creates strong shadows and can wash out the delicate tones of the petals.

When we book your session, I will guide you on the best timing based on the weather, the light, and the specific location we choose.

Spring Photography in the Tri-Cities: Why This Season Matters

Living and working in Port Coquitlam, I am constantly reminded of how lucky we are to have such beauty right in our own neighbourhoods. The Tri-Cities — Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Port Moody — and the surrounding communities of Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Burnaby, and beyond are full of incredible spots where the blossoms put on a show every spring.

Some of my favourite locations are ones I have returned to year after year, watching the same trees grow fuller and more spectacular each season. There is something deeply grounding about that — returning to the same beautiful places and meeting new people in new stages of their lives beneath those same branches.

Spring photography in BC is not just about the scenery. It is about what the season represents. New growth. Fresh starts. The reminder that after every long winter, something beautiful is waiting.

They Will Not Wait — And Neither Should You

Cherry blossoms do not check your calendar.

They bloom when they are ready, they stay for a breath, and then they let go. That is part of their beauty — and part of why these sessions carry so much meaning.

If you have been thinking about a spring portrait session — for your family, your partner, your grad, yourself — this is your sign. The blossoms are coming. Let's make sure we are ready.
