Cake Smash Sessions — Why Baby's First Birthday Deserves to Be Celebrated Through Photos

June 10, 20266 min read

One year.

It sounds so simple when you say it. Just twelve months. But if you are a parent reading this, you already know. That first year holds more love, more change, more sleepless wonder than you ever thought possible. You blinked, and the tiny human who once fit in the crook of your arm is now pulling themselves up on furniture, babbling at the dog, and discovering that the world is full of things worth reaching for.

A first birthday is not just a party. It is a milestone, for your baby, yes. But also for you. You made it through the hardest, most beautiful year of your life. And that is worth documenting.

That is where cake smash sessions come in.

What Exactly Is a Cake Smash Session?

If you have never heard of a cake smash session before , or you have seen them on social media and wondered what the whole thing actually involves, here is the simple version.

A cake smash is a portrait session built around your baby's first birthday. We set up a beautiful scene, themed, styled, full of personality, and then we give your one-year-old a cake. Their very own cake. And we let them do whatever they want with it.

Sometimes that means cautious poking. Sometimes it means full hands-in, frosting-everywhere, pure joy. Sometimes it means a look of complete confusion followed by the biggest grin you have ever seen.

Every baby reacts differently. And that is exactly the point. The photos are real. The expressions are unscripted. The mess is part of the magic.

As a photographer, these sessions are some of my absolute favourites, because there is no posing, no forcing a smile, no "look at the camera." It is just your baby being exactly who they are at this stage of life. And that is always worth capturing.

Something New — Curated Digital Backdrops

One of the things I am most excited about right now is the addition of curated digital backdrops to my cake smash sessions.

Here is what that means for you: instead of a simple studio setup, I can place your baby in a completely customized world. Think themed environments, whimsical gardens, dreamy clouds, vintage birthday scenes, soft pastels, bold colours, seasonal designs, whatever fits your vision.

The backdrops are carefully curated and designed to look natural and cohesive in the final images. They add a layer of creativity and storytelling that takes a cake smash from beautiful to breathtaking, while still keeping your baby as the star of every frame.

This is something I have been working on and refining, and the results have been incredible. If you have a theme in mind for your baby's first birthday, there is a very good chance we can bring it to life in a way you did not think was possible.

What to Expect During the Session

Cake smash sessions are relaxed, playful, and, yes, messy. That is the whole idea.

Here is how it typically goes:

We start with clean, styled portraits. Your baby in their birthday outfit, looking fresh and adorable, before the cake enters the picture. These are the ones grandma will frame.

Then we bring in the cake. I set the scene, step back, and let your little one explore. Some babies dive right in. Others take their time, touching the frosting tentatively, tasting it, deciding whether this is the greatest thing that has ever happened to them or deeply suspicious. Both reactions make for incredible photos.

The session usually lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, which gives us plenty of time for the styled portraits, the cake smash itself, and, if you want, a quick cleanup or bath shot at the end. Those post-cake, wrapped-in-a-towel moments are often some of the sweetest of the entire session.

Tips for Parents — What to Bring and How to Prepare

Outfit: Something cute but not precious. A simple onesie, a tutu, a little birthday crown , keep it comfortable and easy to move in. Bring a change of clothes for after.

The cake: You are welcome to bring your own cake, or I can recommend local bakers who make gorgeous smash cakes. Keep it simple, a small round cake with soft frosting works best. Fondant is harder for tiny hands to grab. Buttercream is your friend.

Extras: If you have a banner, balloons, or a special toy you want included in the setup, bring them along. These personal touches make the session feel like yours.

Timing: Schedule around your baby's best time of day. If they are a morning person, let's book a morning session. A well-rested, recently-fed baby is a happy baby, and happy babies make the best photos.

Expectations: Let go of perfection. Seriously. The beauty of a cake smash is in the unpredictability. If your baby cries, that is okay. If they ignore the cake entirely, that is okay too. Every reaction is real, and real is always beautiful.

Why the First Birthday Matters

I have photographed a lot of milestones over the years, weddings, graduations, family portraits, newborn sessions. And there is something about the first birthday that carries a particular kind of tenderness.

It marks the end of the beginning. That newborn phase, the one that felt like it would last forever and also somehow ended in a heartbeat, is behind you now. Your baby is becoming a toddler. A little person with opinions and expressions and a personality that grows bigger every day.

Documenting this moment is not about having perfect pictures for social media. It is about holding on to who they are right now. The way they laugh. The way they reach for things. The way frosting looks on those tiny fingers.

These are the details that fade faster than you think. And having them captured, really captured, in images that feel alive, is a gift you give yourself for years to come.
