Why Christmas Minis Sell Out Every Year

It might still be summer, but if you’ve photographed with me at Christmas before, you already know there is one holiday tradition that starts a little earlier around here.

Christmas photos.

Every year, families ask when the dates are coming. Past clients watch their inboxes. Parents start thinking about outfits before most of us have even packed away the beach towels.

And every year, the available Christmas sessions tend to fill quickly.

So why do families start planning their Christmas photos months before December?

I think it’s because these sessions have become about so much more than getting a photo for the Christmas card.

They’re about tradition, memory, and capturing one more Christmas exactly as your family is right now.

And this year, we’re making that experience even more special.

Every Christmas Looks a Little Different

When your children are little, one year can change everything.

The toddler who needed to be carried into last year’s photos may be running into this year’s session.

Someone may have lost their first tooth.

Someone else suddenly looks like a teenager.

Maybe there is a new baby, a new family member, or even a four-legged addition joining the Christmas photo this year.

That is one of the reasons families return for Christmas portraits year after year.

At first, you may be thinking about a beautiful photograph for your Christmas cards.

But then you line those photos up over the years and realize you’ve created something much bigger.

You’ve documented your family growing up.

The matching outfits change. The hairstyles change. The little hands get bigger. The personalities become even bigger.

There is something comforting about Christmas traditions.

We bring out the same ornaments.

We make certain recipes.

We watch the movies we’ve already seen twenty times.

And for many families, annual Christmas photos become part of that rhythm too.

The kids know it’s coming. Parents start thinking about what everyone will wear. Grandparents wait for the new photograph.

Eventually, looking back through those Christmas portraits becomes a tradition of its own.

That’s one of my favourite things about photographing families year after year.

I get to watch your families change.

I remember the little ones who were shy during their first session and then arrive a few years later ready to tell me absolutely everything that has happened since I last saw them.

Photography has this incredible ability to freeze one moment, but when you put years of those moments together, they begin to tell a much bigger story.

This Year, We’re Stepping Inside Woodstone Cottage

Christmas at Woodstone Cottage has been part of the Photos by Cheryl holiday season for several years.

But 2026 is going to feel different.

In previous years, families have been photographed outside the cottage.

This Christmas, we’re opening the door.

For the first time, families will step inside Woodstone Cottage for a warm, intimate, fireside Christmas experience designed to feel less like a traditional mini session and more like coming home for Christmas.

Think cozy Christmas details, a beautiful fireplace setting, warm light, and that timeless feeling of gathering together at home during the holidays.

I want these photographs to feel festive without feeling overly trendy.

Something beautiful enough for this year’s Christmas card, but timeless enough that you’ll still love looking at it ten Christmases from now.

Because the setting is part of the experience.

But your family will always be the most important part of the photograph.

A Personalized Christmas Keepsake Is Coming Home With You

I also wanted this year’s Christmas experience to include something families could take home and make part of their own holiday traditions.

Every session will include a personalized family Christmas cookie tin.

The tin will be incorporated into your Christmas photos, and then it comes home with you.

Fill it with shortbread.

Use it for Santa’s cookies.

Bring it out every December.

Let the kids recognize it as their Christmas tin.

My hope is that years from now, it won’t simply be something you received at a photography session.

It will be part of Christmas.

Because the best keepsakes aren’t necessarily the things we put away somewhere safe.

They’re the things we use, bring out year after year, and attach memories to along the way.

Why Do Christmas Sessions Fill So Quickly?

There is a practical reason Christmas sessions tend to book quickly too.

Christmas has a deadline.

Families need time to receive their photographs, create Christmas cards, order gifts, send images to grandparents, and actually enjoy their new photos throughout the holiday season.

And there are only so many sessions available.

Once those dates and times are booked, they’re booked.

That’s why I always encourage families who know they want Christmas photos to start thinking about them early, even if it feels slightly strange to be talking about Christmas while we’re still enjoying summer.

Waiting until November to start looking for Christmas photos can mean missing out on the dates that work best for your family.
